The year 2013 on December 14th at 04:01; my grandmother pours her love into me one last time. We were sitting in the kitchen, sharing a hearty meal. Through the exchange of gestures, we connected: mind to mind, heart to heart and soul to soul. Her eyes were filled with joy; her spirit emanated peace. And as I sat in her sweetness, her warmth touched my skin illuminating parts of me I had once forgotten. In that moment I knew... I knew that all is w...my dream gets disrupted by the scrambling of keys and rattling of the burglar gate. It's my mom. I can tell by the rhythm of her walk; light but defined. Her feet hastily stomp the ground with each step carrying a different emotion. The car rumbles for a couple of seconds and the last sound I hear is a tyre screeching as she speeds of. I don't think much of it and allow my heavy eyelids rest as dawn approaches.
A couple of hours later, I am woken up by an incoming call. "Mma has passed on," she says and my mother begins to weep on the other side of the line. My response ? Silence. I knew... all is well. I start experiencing flashbacks of how my grandmother's warm smile turned cold within a short space of time. The random screams throughout the night, the shame in my grandmother's eyes whenever I had to change her drain tubes and finding my mom staring into complete darkness in the wake of the night. My grandmother had succumbed to breast cancer. I wish I could've held her hand tighter when we prayed. Maybe I could've combed her hair more gently before it fell out. If only I could've carried her pain and healed parts of her that were left void. But all is well... all could've been well. Perhaps she could've been made well ? Perhaps my grandmother's fate could've been different had we known about a case dating back 26 years in the Supreme Court of New York between The State of New York and Usha Herbal Research Institute: Alfredo Bowman known as Dr. Sebi.
In 1987, General Attorney Robert Abrams charged Dr. Sebi with practicing medicine without a license and the case yielded a "not guilty" verdict. Dr. Sebi not only claimed but proved that his healing technique cured chronic illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, blindness, sickle cell anemia, lupus, depression, herpes etc. In court he presented 77 patients representing a range of chronic illnesses who were: diagnosed, treated, cured and verified. Now, Dr. Sebi didn't attain that title through any formal education system, as a matter of fact, he had never set foot in a single educational institution since birth. He was simply a traditional herbalist igedla who acquired his body of knowledge in a small town in Mexico. When God creates our bodies, [S]He develops a system made up of atoms, elements and processes that operate interdependently to reach a balanced state. Our bodies are self-reliant, self-soothing and self-healing. Our duty as custodians of these vessels is to generate a conducive environment in which our bodies can function optimally. Dr. Sebi achieved this through intracellular chelation which in layman terms is the cleansing and restoration of cells to their original state. He sourced plants, herbs and roots from indigenous natural environments all over the world. "The body can only accept what it is made up of, not something new or alien to it," Dr. Sebi states. He believed that chemicals cannot assimilate with the body, only herbs. From the ground we were formed; form the ground we shall be nourished. Dr. Sebi's methodologies are testimonies of God's word for "the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations," Revelations 22v2. Dr. Sebi then supplements his herbs with the prescription of an alkaline diet instead of an acidic one. Alkaline foods are fruits, vegetables and water with a PH level of 8 to 14 whereas Acidic foods are meat, diary etc. and have a PH level of 0-7. Alkaline foods stem from God's hand hence [S]He said during the days of creation, "Look! I have given you the seed-bearing plants throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food," [Genesis 1v29].
Dr Sebi's cleansing method was not only limited to herbs but incorporated purging in the form of fasting. Fasting is a spiritual discipline where one reduces or completely eliminates their food intake in an effort to align body with spirit. It's a practice that amplifies prayer allowing the heavens to roar with thunder in response. In stillness you release; in stillness God speaks. I never grasped the notion of fasting from an intellectual perspective; I just found my spirit ushering my body in that direction one random day. It was a case of: you don't know until you know, and then you definitely know. I was in the midst of spiritual warfare where I was exposed to a darkness that had penetrated my flesh. I detail this in my article Isichitho sesilwane - P2. The first step in regaining my power was through intermittent fasting & prayer at a specific time of the day. The first day I allowed my spirit to lead me, the meaning of a dream was revealed and my body responded by releasing spiritual toxins that had manifested into the physical. I experienced a mini convulsion where my knees were pressed against the floor, fingers gripped onto the toilet seat and water with white foam escaping my throat. That day I understood self-mastery; where I allowed spirit to be a master of body. I gained renewed strength in a physical, mental and spiritual sense. Renewed strength acquired from fasting is detailed in the book of Daniel. "But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king... 'Please test us for 10 days on a diet of vegetables and water,' Daniel said. 'At the end of the 10 days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king's food.' The chief official agreed to Daniel's suggestion and tested them for 10 days. At the end of the 10 days, Daniel and his 3 friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king. So after that, the chief official fed them only vegetables instead of the food and wine provided for the others. God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams," Daniel 1v8-17.
"I represent a country, I represent a people, I represent a race...I am African, I see things the African way," Dr. Sebi would boldly acclaim. The lush greenery, refreshing waters and still savanna throughout the South African landscape have nourished our bones in abundance since the beginning of time. Let us honour God's hand by looking after the temples that house He[R] essence. Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.
